Competency Based Interviews

Yashi Avatar

Competency-based interviews are a type of job interview that focuses on assessing a candidate’s specific competencies or skills that are required for success in a particular role. This type of interview typically involves asking the candidate a series of questions that are designed to elicit examples of how they have demonstrated the desired competencies in the past.

The questions asked in a competency-based interview are often structured around the organization’s specific competency framework or the specific competencies identified as essential for success in the role. For example, if the role requires strong leadership skills, the questions may be structured around the organization’s leadership competency framework, and the candidate may be asked to provide examples of how they have demonstrated leadership in the past.

The interviewer may use a STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) approach to structure the questions and guide the candidate’s responses. This approach requires the candidate to provide specific examples of a Situation they faced, the Task they needed to accomplish, the Actions they took, and the Results they achieved.

Competency-based interviews can be an effective tool for assessing a candidate’s skills and abilities, as they provide a structured and consistent approach to evaluating candidates. They can also help to reduce bias in the interview process, as the questions are focused on specific competencies rather than personal characteristics or qualifications.

Overall, competency-based interviews are an important component of the hiring process, and they can help to ensure that the best candidate is selected for the role based on their specific skills and abilities.
